- The 1970-71 Esso Power Players set included 252 color stamps measuring approximately 1 1/2" by 2". The stamps were issued in six-stamp sheets and given away free with a minimum purchase of $3 of Esso gasoline. There were 18 stamps for each of the 14 teams then in the NHL. The stamps were unnumbered except for jersey (uniform) number. The set was issued with an album, which could be found in either a soft or hard bound version. The hard cover album supposedly had extra pages with additional players. The stamps and albums were available in both French and English language versions. The set was numbered below numerically within each team as follows: Montreal Canadiens (1-18), Toronto Maple Leafs (19-36), Vancouver Canucks (37-54), Boston Bruins (55-72), Buffalo Sabres (73-90), California Golden Seals (91-108), Chicago Blackhawks (109-126), Detroit Red Wings (127-144), Los Angeles Kings (145-162), Minnesota North Stars (163-180), New York Rangers (181-198), Philadelphia Flyers (199-216), Pittsburgh Penguins (217-234), and St. Louis Blues (235-252). Supposedly there were 59 stamps which are tougher to find than the others. The short-printed stamps were apparently those players who were pre-printed into the soft-cover album and hence not included in the first stamp printing.
